Summary:

  • Small biopharma companies rated higher for flexibility in remote work options than larger firms.

  • 71% of respondents in a LinkedIn poll favor small biopharmas for better remote work experiences.

  • Apogee Therapeutics has 92% of its employees working remotely.

  • Insmed maintains a low turnover below 10% due to flexible work arrangements.

  • Hybrid work is preferred by many professionals for the face-to-face interactions it allows.

When it comes to flexibility and remote work, small biopharma companies appear to have an edge over their larger counterparts, according to recent findings by BioSpace. A survey conducted with over 3,600 life sciences professionals revealed that smaller employers received a higher average score for flexibility—8.71 compared to 7.9 for larger firms.

Flexibility and Remote Options

In a LinkedIn poll, 71% of respondents indicated that smaller biopharma firms offer better remote work options. However, it's crucial to note that not every small company excels in flexibility, with some requiring on-site presence.

Circumstances, Roles Drive Flexibility

According to Greg Clouse, recruitment manager at BioSpace, the flexibility within biopharmas often depends on job roles. For instance, regulatory professionals and senior leaders may find it easier to work remotely compared to lab workers.

Abhiram, a biopharma employee, shared his experience of better flexibility at large firms compared to a small biotech where he had to be on-site every day. This shift allowed him to manage personal appointments better and even incorporate workouts into his day.

Conversely, Victoria, who currently works at a small biotech, enjoys the 100% remote setup, which alleviated her exhausting two-hour commute from previous larger firms.

What 2 Best Places to Work Winners Offer

BioSpace highlights two top-rated biopharma companies for flexibility: Apogee Therapeutics and Insmed.

  • Apogee Therapeutics boasts 92% of its nearly 200 employees working remotely, with periodic in-person meetings to foster team relationships.
  • Insmed allows employees to choose their work location based on their roles, maintaining a flexible approach that has contributed to a low turnover rate of less than 10% globally this year.

The Value of Hybrid Work: Making Connections

Hybrid work arrangements are becoming more common, with professionals valuing the face-to-face interactions that come with occasional office visits. Jill Drury, a medical director, appreciates the balance between remote work and in-person meetings, emphasizing the authenticity of personal connections.
