Ukuleles in Bhutan

In early November, approximately 30 children in the remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan received ukuleles as part of the latest initiative by the World Ukulele Program. The program aims to spread aloha globally and is led by Jeff Peterson, a multi-award winning guitarist, alongside Tom Vendetti, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker.

The team also included talented musicians such as Tom Lunneberg, Jeff Cook, Kevin Horan, and Ann Mortifee, who is known for her work with the late legendary flutist Paul Horn. Peterson emphasized, "The ukulele is a very social instrument; it's small, portable, and easy to play, making it accessible for everyone."

The Mohala Hou Foundation, founded by Keola and Moanalani Beamer, operates the program with a mission to promote cultural exchange through music. They previously conducted similar programs in Cambodia and Sikkim.

While in Bhutan, Vendetti honored local cultural performers Jigme Drukpa and Thinley Choden with Emmy Award plaques for their contributions to his documentary, “Bhutan Taking The Middle Path to Happiness.” This film explores Bhutan's unique approach to happiness and well-being, emphasizing the importance of following the Buddhist middle path.

The trip also included a challenging hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched over 9,000 feet above the Paro Valley. Vendetti shared insights about his upcoming documentary on Peterson, which showcases his Concerto for Slack Key Guitar and Orchestra and features stunning visuals of Hawaii's volcanoes.

Peterson has recently released a new album, “Slack Key for the Holidays,” which includes festive interpretations of classic holiday songs. He expressed his excitement about sharing this music with the world.
