Machine Learning Engineer
Job Description
Posted on: July 9, 2026
R&D Developer | Machine Learning & Computer Vision | MEQ SolutionsLocation: Fully Remote (Australia)
Type: Permanent, Full-Time
MEQ Solutions is a fast-growing agtech scale-up building world-first measurement technology for the global red meat industry. With recent USDA accreditation for their video-based beef grading system and a fresh A$23m raise from Insight Partners, MEQ is accelerating into its next phase of growth and has some genuinely exciting projects coming up.
nDeva is working these roles exclusively with MEQ.
About the role
This is not a role where you spend six months perfecting a single model. You will be jumping into greenfield projects that combine cameras, conveyor systems, computer vision, edge compute, and machine learning to solve problems the industry has never solved before.
The headline project is an individual steak grading system. Cameras on a conveyor belt in an abattoir, identifying and grading individual steaks across multiple traits in real time. It is a two-year funded research project with a small, tight-knit team and a lot of room to own your piece of it.
Beyond that, the team works on time series prediction models, 3D point cloud processing, hyperspectral and spectroscopy data, and training ML models that need to run at 15fps on bare-metal edge devices in factories that may not have internet access.
What you will be doing
- Contributing to a greenfield computer vision and ML pipeline for real-time steak grading at scale
- Training, evaluating, deploying and monitoring ML models on edge devices
- Debugging complex hardware-software-ML pipelines across sensor data, preprocessing, models, and outputs
- Working across disciplines with hardware, factory, and field teams to understand the full system
- Contributing to research projects spanning 3D data, time series forecasting, and spectroscopy
What they are looking forMust haves:
- Solid Python proficiency, used day to day (tested in the first interview with a simple live coding exercise)
- Real classical ML experience: you have trained models, understand overfitting and underfitting, and can talk about loss functions, learning rate scheduling, and evaluation metrics. Not just LLM or chatbot tooling
- A self-starter mentality: you figure out who you need to talk to and get things done without being prodded
- Clear, precise communication, written and spoken
- At least 1 to 2 years of actually building things, or a strong project portfolio if you are earlier in your career
Nice to haves:
- Computer vision experience, particularly segmentation, object detection, or classification
- Deploying ML models to edge devices or resource-constrained hardware
- Video processing pipelines
- Android ecosystem familiarity
- Agtech, IoT, or industrial automation background
- Hardware tinkerer in your spare time (PCB design, drones, Arduino, that sort of thing)
The team and culture
MEQ is around 50 people with 20 to 30 on the tech side. The ML and Data Science team is currently 7, growing to 11 with these hires. They are a hands-on, curious group that thrives on hard problems without obvious solutions. They do not micromanage. They give you a project, check in with you once a week, and trust you to figure it out.
What is on offer
- Fully remote across Australia and New Zealand
- Flexible hours, as long as you can connect with the team when needed
- Competitive salary, flexible for the right person
- Permanent role with long-term investment intent
- Access to novel, genuinely world-first technical challenges
- Occasional travel and in-person meetups in Sydney and Melbourne
Working rights
You must be an Australian or New Zealand tax resident to be considered for this role.
