The Institute for Human Rights & Business (IHRB) is hiring a Research & Engagement Lead β Adaptation Finance (Africa) β a fully remote consultancy role focused on reshaping climate adaptation finance and insurance systems across Africa. This position is part of IHRB's Just Transitions Programme, which ensures climate solutions are socially inclusive and rights-based.

Focus on "Just" Adaptation Finance
Climate adaptation finance in Africa is fragmented and under-scaled. Insurance and risk-transfer mechanisms often fail vulnerable populations, reinforcing inequality. This research aims to reorient financial systems toward people-centred, resilient adaptation outcomes.
Role Purpose
The Research & Engagement Lead will design and deliver a flagship report on just adaptation finance in Africa, focusing on:
- Financial institutions and development finance actors
- Insurance and reinsurance markets
- Risk-transfer and blended finance mechanisms
- Community-led resilience models
The goal is to critically assess how decisions are made, risk is priced, and capital flows shape resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Design & Stakeholder Engagement: Engage banks, investors, insurers, policymakers, and community leaders.
- Analytical Framework Development: Map adaptation finance instruments, including public, private, blended finance, and insurance tools.
- Case Studies & Evidence Building: Document real-world examples across African contexts.
- Report Development: Translate complex financial systems into clear frameworks and practical insights.
Required Experience
- 7+ years in climate finance, sustainable finance, or development finance
- Strong understanding of African financial systems
- Experience with financial institutions, investors, or insurance actors
- Proven ability to produce high-quality research reports
Desirable: Experience with development finance institutions, climate funds, insurance markets, or human rights frameworks.
Contract Details
- Duration: 7β9 months, part-time (~2.5 days/week)
- Start: Ideally April 2026
- Location: Fully remote; candidates based in Africa preferred
- Budget: Β£48,600 total (propose day rate)
