The return-to-office (RTO) conflict intensifies as firms like Amazon and JPMorgan push for employees to return. However, Atlassian is thriving by expanding its remote work model.
Avani Prabhakar, Atlassian's Chief People Officer, emphasizes that the company never planned to revert to a traditional office model. This fully distributed work model was in development before 2020 but gained momentum during the pandemic lockdowns. To enhance productivity, Atlassian established a “Team Anywhere” initiative, which includes the Teamwork Lab, where behavioral scientists innovate work processes.
Key components of Atlassian's remote-first model include:
- Asynchronous communication: Teams prioritize written communication to facilitate collaboration.
- Open by default: All written materials are accessible to everyone.
- Connection: Fostering relationships among remote teams.
- Time zone awareness: Understanding and accommodating different working hours.
The results speak for themselves: Atlassian's workforce has tripled in size during the last four and a half years, and job applications have more than doubled. Furthermore, 91% of employees indicate that flexibility is a significant factor in their decision to remain with the company.
