About Transportme
Transportme (TME) is a Queensland-based SaaS company building transit management technology for bus operators across Australia. Our platform is used by operators to manage routes, fleets, fares, drivers, and passenger experience across complex regional and metro networks.
We are currently in a pivotal period of transition. Whilst continuing to support and evolve our established platform, we are executing a greenfield rebuild of the entire product suite as a modern, cloud-native architecture. This next-generation platform, is being built from the ground up and will progressively replace the existing platform as operators are transitioned across during an end-of-life programme.
This is an opportunity to join at a defining moment, shape the way we build software, and lead a team that is embracing AI-assisted development as a core engineering practice.
The Role
The Engineering Lead, Platform & Delivery is a senior, full-stack technical leadership role responsible for the delivery, quality, and operational integrity of both the next-generation platform and the existing production platform as it progresses through its end-of-life cycle.
This is not purely a hands-on engineering role, nor is it purely a management role. We are looking for someone who can operate fluidly across both dimensions: contributing directly to architecture and engineering decisions whilst providing strategic technical leadership to a cross-functional team of front-end, back-end, mobile, QA, DevOps, and support engineers.
Critically, this person will serve as our internal authority on AI-assisted development practices, helping the business adopt and govern a new model of engineering where AI tooling is embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle. You will shape how this team builds, not just what it builds.
Key Responsibilities:Platform Leadership & Delivery
- Own the technical delivery roadmap for the new platform, working closely with the Product team to translate product vision into executable engineering plans.
- Lead the end-of-life programme for the existing platform, ensuring continuity of service for operators during transition and maintaining the platform to the agreed standard throughout its lifecycle.
- Drive architectural decision-making across both platforms, ensuring decisions are well-documented, scalable, and aligned with long-term business objectives.
- Set and maintain engineering standards across the team, including code quality, testing practices, documentation, and release governance.
- Manage technical risk across both platforms, proactively identifying dependencies, vulnerabilities, and constraints before they become delivery blockers.
Team Leadership
- Lead a cross-functional engineering team comprising front-end, back-end, mobile, QA, DevOps, and support engineers.
- Provide technical mentorship and career development support to engineers across disciplines.
- Foster a high-performance, psychologically safe team culture built on accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance management for engineering roles.
- Support effective sprint planning, prioritisation, and delivery ceremonies in alignment with the broader product and delivery process.
AI-Assisted Development
- Champion AI-assisted engineering as a core practice within the team, with direct, hands-on experience using agentic AI development tools (such as Claude Code or equivalent terminal-based coding agents) as a primary engineering instrument. You will establish the standards, guardrails, and governance frameworks that allow the team to operate confidently under this model.
- Define and enforce best practices for reviewing AI-generated code at team scale, including establishing what good looks like for prompt engineering, output validation, test coverage of AI-generated features, and quality assurance processes that account for the speed and volume at which AI-assisted teams can produce code.
- Stay current with the rapidly evolving AI development tooling landscape and advise the business on adoption opportunities and risks.
- Lead the team’s adoption of agentic AI development workflows, where AI autonomously scaffolds, refactors, and generates substantial portions of a codebase under structured human review. This includes defining the human-in-the-loop review process, setting merge standards for AI-generated pull requests, and ensuring the team operates with appropriate accountability at each stage of the workflow.
- Support the broader team in upskilling to work effectively alongside AI tools as primary engineering instruments.
Security, Compliance & Infrastructure
- Ensure the platform and engineering processes meet and maintain ISO/IEC 27001 certification requirements.
- Lead DevSecOps practices across the team, ensuring security is embedded throughout the CI/CD pipeline rather than treated as a gate.
- Maintain oversight of cloud infrastructure built on AWS and Cloudflare, ensuring it is managed as infrastructure as code (IaC).
- Collaborate with DevOps resources to maintain robust, automated deployment pipelines and environment management.
- Manage incident response and post-incident review processes, ensuring lessons learned are embedded into engineering practices.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Bring a strong customer mindset to engineering decisions, ensuring technical choices are grounded in operator and passenger experience outcomes.
- Engage directly with clients and key stakeholders where technical context is required, particularly during the existing products end-of-life transition.
- Represent the engineering function in cross-functional planning, product reviews, and commercial discussions.
- Partner with the product team to ensure feature delivery is aligned to client commitments and roadmap expectations.
What We Are Looking For:Essential
- Demonstrated experience as a full-stack software engineer with a proven track record of technical leadership across cross-functional teams.
- Experience leading teams that include front-end, back-end, mobile, QA, DevOps, and support disciplines.
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and infrastructure as code tooling (e.g. Terraform, or CDK).
- Strong familiarity with CI/CD pipeline design, DevSecOps principles, and automated testing frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience working towards or maintaining ISO/IEC 27001 compliance within an engineering context.
- A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tooling (such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent), including direct experience leading an engineering team that uses AI as a primary development instrument rather than a supplementary one. Must include demonstrable experience establishing code review standards, governance frameworks, and quality assurance processes specifically designed for AI-generated output.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with agentic AI development workflows, where AI tooling autonomously generates, scaffolds, or refactors substantial portions of a codebase under human review. Given the recency of this technology, a formal year count is not required; however, candidates must be able to speak directly and specifically to their practical experience with agentic tools and the processes they have put in place to govern their use.
- Ability to navigate the complexity of maintaining a legacy production platform whilst simultaneously leading a greenfield platform build.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to engage directly with clients, operators, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Based in Australia with full working rights.
Highly Regarded
- Experience in SaaS product companies, ideally in transport, logistics, or operations-critical sectors.
- Familiarity with Cloudflare products and edge-delivery architectures.
- Experience with mobile engineering (iOS and/or Android) at a leadership level.
- Previous involvement in platform end-of-life or customer migration programmes.
- Formal qualifications in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline.
Why Transportme
- A genuinely unique opportunity to lead a platform rebuild from the ground up, not just maintain what exists.
- Work in a team that is embracing AI-assisted engineering as a serious practice, not as a novelty.
- Real ownership and influence over technical direction, architecture, and team culture.
- A product that has tangible impact on how people move around their communities every day.
- Remote-first, flexible working environment with a collaborative, high-trust team culture.
How to Apply
To apply for this role, please submit your resume and a brief cover letter outlining your experience leading platform engineering teams and your perspective on AI-assisted development. We are particularly interested in hearing about a time you navigated the complexity of evolving or replacing a production system whilst maintaining continuity of service.
Applications that do not include a cover letter will not be progressed.
