About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer - Backend, Cards to join our dynamic Card team. In this pivotal role, you will be part of a high-caliber engineering organization at a critical growth phase for Empower. You will collaborate directly with product and technical leaders across Card Spend and Card Payments domains to shape and execute the technical strategy that powers our AI-driven credit platform. Your expertise will serve as a force multiplier—independently tackling complex challenges while elevating the entire team’s capabilities. You will have significant autonomy to identify opportunities and develop solutions that support our rapidly expanding customer base and innovative payment systems. This role offers a unique chance to influence the future of our credit infrastructure, ensuring scalability, reliability, and competitive advantage in a fast-paced, remote-first environment. Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience developing web APIs within .NET (C#)
  • Proven experience building resilient financial systems with state machine logic and complex lifecycles
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, queue-based architectures, and data-intensive applications
  • Experience scaling consumer-facing products with high transaction volumes
  • Ability to balance immediate business needs with long-term architectural considerations
  • Effective collaboration skills with product, risk, and operational teams
  • Comfort in making decisions with incomplete information and adapting to new data
  • Mentoring skills to elevate team capabilities
  • Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools such as Cursor, Augment, and Factory

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems for credit card platforms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and deliver innovative solutions
  • Enhance existing AI-driven payment scheduling and rewards systems to improve accuracy and utilization
  • Optimize virtual card infrastructure for instant spending capabilities
  • Build automated loss mitigation features leveraging proprietary risk models
  • Create customer segmentation tools to support portfolio expansion from non-prime to near-prime segments
  • Ensure system resilience, security, and compliance with industry standards
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices within the team
  • Identify opportunities for technical improvements and drive their implementation
